Black Dahlia Special</span><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #783f04;">Following a seminar I had in my pathology museum (which is what I do 'by day') I decided to look deeper into the persona of Elizabeth Short by reviewing her make-up choices. They actually tell a lot about her personality at the time of her death and I became particularly interested in discoverying why after I read a blog post on Vintage Powder Room by Joan Renner <a href="http://vintagepowderroom.com/?tag=black-dahlia"><span style="color: #990000;">http://vintagepowderroom.com/?tag=black-dahlia</span></a> </span></div>
<span style="color: #783f04;">The BEST part is that I actually got to dress like her using an inexpensive wig I found on eBay and the infamous 'black, tailored suit' which I already had. After popping a Dahlia in my hair and squirting myself with our Cake It On! favourite: Lily of the Valley, I genuinely began to feel like a different person. See what you think:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oDOMCymHXLI/UTIUMUPyAYI/AAAAAAAABwM/AKDwHZB4NnY/s1600/DahliaA.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oDOMCymHXLI/UTIUMUPyAYI/AAAAAAAABwM/AKDwHZB4NnY/s320/DahliaA.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="color: #783f04;">For this particular cake It On! I created a little gift to give away which included Elizabeth's favourite <span style="color: #990000;">blood red</span> nail varnish and lipstick as well as AVON favourite Magix Face Perfector which I LOVE for vintage looks as I get a flawless, matte effect. There was also a mini 'Little Black Dress' perfume because if anyone was going to wear a little black dress it would be Elizabeth Short, and also some black dahlia earrings. The way to win this was to answer as many questions in the quiz <span style="color: #783f04;">about The Dahlia, various depictions of her in popular culture and the circumstances surrounding her death.</span></span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #783f04;"> </span><span style="color: #783f04;">I had my lovely friend Kay do vintage half-moon manicures on the girls who attended as that was a popular style in the 1940's (and has of course been made popular again by the lovely Dita Von Teese)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #990000; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The four nail products used in the manicures</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #783f04;">And of course the girls got to try the products they wanted to purchase which is the reason I love AVON and which is why I do these retro AVON tea parties! There's nothing better than being able to smell the products, take samples home and even return them if you're unhappy with them which is something you can't do with most cosmetics. Try going into Boots and saying "I'm unhappy with this fake tan/moisturiser/lipstick - take it back and give me a refund" and <em>believe</em> me, you won't get far!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #783f04;">Of course the other reason is that we get too just hang out and have fun:</span></div>

<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">In the wintry Los Angeles of 1947, better known for its glamorous film stars and Hollywood lifestyle, Elizabeth "Beth" Short became the victim of one of America's most brutal murders.</span><br />
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">At only 22 years of age, Beth had spent much of her early adult life with a wistful desire to be 'in movies'; drifting from the East Coast to the West and back again, melancholy and lonely yet picking up admirers wherever she went. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Rv0vCs7JfuM/UPK6vhWwsFI/AAAAAAAABbU/2M4BKQLsj3M/s1600/dahlia1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Rv0vCs7JfuM/UPK6vhWwsFI/AAAAAAAABbU/2M4BKQLsj3M/s320/dahlia1.jpg" width="255" /></a></div>
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">During this exact week in that fateful January, Beth was being brutally murdered by someone who still remains unknown, and her mutilated, bisected body was discovered on a vacant lot on January 15th.</span><br />
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia;">In my capacity as Pathology Museum curator I have organised a sell-out seminar which can be seen at </span><a href="http://www.tinyurl.com/bartsdahlia" style="font-family: Georgia;"><span style="color: #783f04;">www.tinyurl.com/bartsdahlia</span></a><span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia;">. However, in my other life as AVON lady I have decided to dedicate my next Cake It On! event (February 5th) to the memory of Beth.</span><span style="color: #783f04;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia;">You see, what struck me most during my research into the case reading various books was how often her make-up, perfume and clothing were mentioned by witnesses and how her style deviated from the 'norm' in post-war America - ultimately earning her the nickname 'The Black Dahlia' <em>prior</em> to her death.</span><br />
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"><span style="color: #783f04;">Another woman with the same double life as me (paradoxically interested in both make-up and the macabre!) is Joan Renner who runs the two blogs: Vintage Powder Room and Deranged LA Crimes. Her magnificent post on Beth's make-up can be seen here: </span><a href="http://vintagepowderroom.com/?tag=black-dahlia"><span style="color: #783f04;">http://vintagepowderroom.com/?tag=black-dahlia</span></a><span style="color: #783f04;"> and it was this which really got me thinking about the 'darkness' which resided in Beth and whether or not it could actually influence the manner of her demise...</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jfGsPz3iJRs/UPK7LUZIZ0I/AAAAAAAABbk/cBZ7ZFwyMLA/s1600/dahlia3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jfGsPz3iJRs/UPK7LUZIZ0I/AAAAAAAABbk/cBZ7ZFwyMLA/s320/dahlia3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia;">Joan is a writer, lecturer and social historian with an expertise in historic Los Angeles crime. With her insider info and thorough research she has created a 'personality profile' of Beth based on her clothing and make-up choices. I'm going to use that profile, and some of my own research, to discuss how The Dahlia's choices differed from other women of the time and really made her stand out.</span><br />
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia;">Perhaps that's why she caught the eye of someone with insidious intentions and dark desires?</span><br />
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia;">I'll be giving away a 'Black Dahlia' inspired make-up kit to the winner of the quiz and also a pair of black Dahlia earrings to the winner of the order form raffle. So come along and don your blackest dress and darkest lips and learn some of the lesser known facts of the Dahlia case:</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IodCjsLzEYU/UNRTHCrgMkI/AAAAAAAABXQ/EGOTLK0twt0/s1600/avon9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IodCjsLzEYU/UNRTHCrgMkI/AAAAAAAABXQ/EGOTLK0twt0/s1600/avon9.jpg" /></a></div>
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">There used to be a time when women would wear bright red lipstick whether they were cooking dinner, heading out to the shops or picking the children up from school. In fact there are still some glamorous ladies who do exactly that, such as Gwen Stafani. Her signature red lips can be seen in every single pic of her whether she's wandering round Primrose Hill or singing on stage.</span><br />
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia;">Historically red-lips have represented patriotism and glamour - worn either to show support for troops during the 40's or as a nod to Hollywood sophistication in the 50's.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J2v2SMkreu0/UNRUeVUiFyI/AAAAAAAABXw/U0pZ8qTYyCw/s1600/redlips1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J2v2SMkreu0/UNRUeVUiFyI/AAAAAAAABXw/U0pZ8qTYyCw/s320/redlips1.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-h5zjifHzb0U/UNRUgRU9-jI/AAAAAAAABX4/IkoGv9hPQcY/s1600/redlips4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-h5zjifHzb0U/UNRUgRU9-jI/AAAAAAAABX4/IkoGv9hPQcY/s320/redlips4.jpg" width="241" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia;">Nowadays however, red lips seem to be relegated to the festive season when it becomes 'Christmassy' to don crimson lips and nails. It's considered a 'night-time' colour or worse, the colour of harlots and femme fatales!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7jwsgLoYoEE/UNRXzUJfDZI/AAAAAAAABY4/aG1JDIx1hu0/s1600/redlips3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7jwsgLoYoEE/UNRXzUJfDZI/AAAAAAAABY4/aG1JDIx1hu0/s320/redlips3.jpg" width="226" /></a></div>
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia;">I say that grey drab days in the UK certainly call for a pick me up in the way of a flash of red on the lips and we should return to daytime glamour. However, it <em>is</em> true that red lips can be more 'high maintenance' than a nude gloss or balm, or a lipstick in a paler shade.</span><br />
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia;">There are several ways to combat this - the first is to not actually use a lipstick! I tend to favour Maybelline's "Superstay 24" duo in Cherry Pie, particularly if I'm going to be eating or drinking a lot. The colour stains and grips your lips, and you can simply keep re-applying the clear topcoat so your lips remain moist. Also if anything is going to rub off on a wine glass or cup it will only be the clear topcoat and won't leave a nasty red smudge.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6kOkTB9pQPM/UNSWOq5Ef6I/AAAAAAAABaA/nUij7cPwtxc/s1600/superstay-24hr-color_pack-shot-crop_103720.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="284" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6kOkTB9pQPM/UNSWOq5Ef6I/AAAAAAAABaA/nUij7cPwtxc/s320/superstay-24hr-color_pack-shot-crop_103720.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"><span style="color: #783f04;">However, I am an Avon lady and I do love their</span> <span style="color: red;">Extra Lasting</span><span style="color: #783f04;"> in 'Eternal Flame'</span> <span style="color: #783f04;">which is one of the best vintage reds around. Using a matte lipstick like that (and if I go red I only EVER go matte..) means that the colour will stay on. Also, if you follow these tips from Lisa Eldridge it will ensure you have a lasting finish.</span> </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/oPt8orN449g?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia;">Plus, there is a lot to be said for that retro favourite Lipcote which works really well and yes it <em>is </em>still available (along with setting lotion, talcum powder and other seemingly forgotten favourites...) </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eTxK_6IMyB0/UNSWW21kAGI/AAAAAAAABaI/NtBvUz7Lyao/s1600/Lipcote.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eTxK_6IMyB0/UNSWW21kAGI/AAAAAAAABaI/NtBvUz7Lyao/s320/Lipcote.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sKG1OUf-T1g/UNSY2i0mHJI/AAAAAAAABao/BytyyM6AWXM/s1600/lippy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sKG1OUf-T1g/UNSY2i0mHJI/AAAAAAAABao/BytyyM6AWXM/s320/lippy.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia;">The only thing left to do is choose a colour that's right for you and this is why I like AVON so much. Most of their lipsticks can be ordered in sample size for 25p! Also, if you order a full size and then decide you DON'T like it you can actually <em>send it back</em>. Have you ever tried to do that at Boots or Superdrug? They won't take back cosmetics that have been used, but AVON will.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-64h7pOOYqMU/UNRdScGG7EI/AAAAAAAABZY/jxChnLpdpyE/s1600/avon2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-64h7pOOYqMU/UNRdScGG7EI/AAAAAAAABZY/jxChnLpdpyE/s320/avon2.jpg" width="251" /></a></div>
<span style="color: #783f04; font-family: Georgia;">So come have a wonderful Christmas and I hope to see you at the next Cake It On! on January 17th at Crimson Heart, Leonard Street, Shoreditch EC2A 4QS to browse the catalogues, try the samples and order to your hearts content until you find the perfect red for you. 6:30pm onwards - see you there! xox</span><br />

(AVON Campaign 14)<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The Naughty 90's!</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I'm so happy that I chose the 1990's as my theme for the last vintage AVON party: my hair really badly needed to have the roots bleached and I think I rocked the 90's grunge look fairly well because of it...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p3So8sh5ecs/UF8DNLtjF8I/AAAAAAAABGY/x7GyfBGB6cY/s1600/90b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p3So8sh5ecs/UF8DNLtjF8I/AAAAAAAABGY/x7GyfBGB6cY/s320/90b.jpg" width="233" /></a></div>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Add a few plastic flower clips and a retro tee and the look is complete. Of course the make-up was all AVON, specifically my favourite matt red lippy which is the Lasting Finish in 'Eternal Flame' and I pretty much use it for everything.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">All the other ladies made an effort too: </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Hello Kitty, side ponytails and plastic clips were rife, and we all looked the part while playing Dream Phone and listening to 1990's hits.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Of course the main premise of the evening is to look through the newest AVON catalogue and see what takes your fancy, and I have my trusty vintage cosmetic case full of samples for people to try.</span><br />

The next Cake It On! will be on October 2nd, and as it's the only October one I'll be doing, it will be a Halloween Horror Heroine Special. Also it's the Campaign where the famous AF-33 cream becomes available!! </span><br />

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I think I have started considering the 90's vintage because when you look back on that time things really were SO different! I have memories of covering myself in Impulse body spray and reading 'Just Seveneteen'... especially the rude problems at the back :) I loved Hole and Babes in Toyland at the time but also Shampoo and Alisha's Attic. Everything was pink and bubble-gummy and we all wore plastic flowers in our hair and wanted to be Drew Barrymore. So my next Cake It On! just has to be 1990's</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br />
</span> <span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">For me it's the marriage between girliness and grunge that is summed up by the era but of course it depends on how old you were at the time. Those around my age will know exactly what the above pics are of!</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">So come down to crimson Heart in Shoreditch on September 4th (87 Leonard Street, EC2A 4QS) at 6:30 on September 4th. Expect a picture quiz on 1990's heart-throbs, 'Truth or Dare' and many prizes to be won, as well as my home-made 1990's playlist.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">There'll be makeovers and samples to try and you can bring booze and pay a corkage, or have a cuppa and a cake. See you there! Here's the Facebook link:</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This look is now instantly recognisable as being the one favoured by Dita Von Teese. True to her 1940's style, she has always sported her perfect red talons with the half-moon at the cuticle free from polish. But not many people know that this look actually originated in the 1920s.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IiSzuz-2Loc/UAWpX5C45WI/AAAAAAAAA4Q/lLYSqykDUEI/s1600/nails3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hda="true" height="246" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IiSzuz-2Loc/UAWpX5C45WI/AAAAAAAAA4Q/lLYSqykDUEI/s320/nails3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The 'manicure' itself was invented by a make-up artist at MGM Studios and it wasn't only the half moon that was left clear of colour - the <i>tip</i> of the nail was too. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c5DXdQtDuOE/UAWpg-sUcBI/AAAAAAAAA4Y/eZ-u1tZk29I/s1600/nails2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hda="true" height="267" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c5DXdQtDuOE/UAWpg-sUcBI/AAAAAAAAA4Y/eZ-u1tZk29I/s320/nails2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-04XA42a3Yo0/UAWpj0szrcI/AAAAAAAAA4g/7AKYvl7QTRQ/s1600/nails1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hda="true" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-04XA42a3Yo0/UAWpj0szrcI/AAAAAAAAA4g/7AKYvl7QTRQ/s320/nails1.jpg" width="247" /></a></div><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This look had 2 functions: </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">1) It made the nail polish last a lot longer (we all know the first place your polish chips is the tip, then it looks weird as it grows up and away from the cuticle) and - </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">2) It had the added benefit of being a tricky and delicate paint-job that had obviously been done by some-one else (i.e. a manicurist) so it was in that way a good indicator of social status.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">By the 1940's, the trend was to cover the tips too, although there was a brief resurgence of unpainted tips which can probably be attributed to the war and sparsity of nail polish.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">There are many tutorials that tell you how to get this look by using those nail-tip stickers you buy for French Manicures but I have an even better way to do it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Those manicure stickers aren't sticky enough and the curve is a bit too wide - instead use hole-punch reinforcement stickers from stationery shops and cut them in half. They're cheaper, they're stickier so they don't allow polish to leak beneath them, and the curve is smaller and tighter. Perfect.</span><br />

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">My two main enterprises 'Cake It On!' and The Clandestine Cake Club are meeting at the end of this month in one big cake-y/cosmetic-ky proper <em>make-up bake-up.</em> </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TV_TdWzMM7k/T_1uCP8QkWI/AAAAAAAAA3g/Z8NCTendQzo/s1600/BlitzCakePoster.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img $ca="true" border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TV_TdWzMM7k/T_1uCP8QkWI/AAAAAAAAA3g/Z8NCTendQzo/s320/BlitzCakePoster.jpg" width="233" /></a></div><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This is because of my Avon campaign dates and mental personal schedule all falling around the same time. So while I'm still on this charity ration diet, what better way to pay homage to the women of the era by not only re-creating their recipes but also re-creating their look and having one big Blitz extravaganza! If your'e not a member of Cake Club and want to be then click on the pic below and join the network in general, then look for my Shoreditch group:</span><br />

This is a joint event so you can do either. In fact what I find at a lot of Cake Clubs is that we have soooo much cake left over. We cakey people are sharey people so come along anyway, have a bit of cake and just have fun. There's a war on after all :) xox</span>Carla Valentinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02315529952221641936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8570426678935872920.post-16648463022977941612012-07-03T14:10:00.000-07:002012-07-11T05:38:42.932-07:00Tuesday Tip #7 - Ration Fashion<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large;">Mmmm How To Get Edible Stockings...</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It's common knowledge that during WWII, many women had to 'Make Do And Mend' and even though my month-long charity ration diet only extends to my food (thank God!) it still gets me thinking about other products, especially toiletries.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">During the war, Max Factor stopped making their normal cosmetics and instead made camouflage make-up for troops, Stratton stopped making lipstick casing and instead made munitions casing... I wonder how we'd feel if our favourite mascara was suddenly just unavailable and we had to mix charcoal and Vaseline together to put on our lashes instead?</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nKhVE8ya6eA/T_NZ3dQOqnI/AAAAAAAAA2c/Q6DVts_7arU/s1600/WW2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="253" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nKhVE8ya6eA/T_NZ3dQOqnI/AAAAAAAAA2c/Q6DVts_7arU/s320/WW2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span style="color: #666666;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">But the really big one is stockings. Remember, it wasn't only fashionable for women in the 1940's to wear stockings, it was </span><i style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">proper</i><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">. They didn't walk around like women do nowadays with their thongs sticking up over their Juicy Couture tracksuit waistbands or with their skirts so short you could see what they'd had for breakfast... They were more modest. To not wear stockings meant you were half undressed - a bit like like going out in your work-clothes and slippers.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">That's why wartime women went to such great lengths to achieve the <i>look</i> of stockings. Initially, with nylon being rationed, a leg-tan cream was produced (by Max Factor). It had the added benefit of being manufactured too thick, so it went even further because it could be watered down by the consumer. Eventually Max factor caught on and thinned it down.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">But soon even that was too difficult or expensive to get hold of so women were very industrious and used gravy browning or tea bags to stain the legs, then drew a 'seam' down the back with eyebrow pencil or eyeliner. You could either get a friend to do it or rub the pencil down something long and straight, like a 30cm ruler, and 'press' it into the leg. It seems the gravy browning method was more popular, despite the fact that it used to attract flies in the heat! Also you'd have to wash it off before bed. We all know the biscuity horror smell of 'fake-tan' sheets...imagine if that was gravy?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="color: #666666;">I also do like the modern interpretation of this, a tattoo of a stocking seam on the back of the legs. </span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3Q7dHA30r20/T_NeqtAfUFI/AAAAAAAAA24/kHagkGaurU0/s1600/stockings3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3Q7dHA30r20/T_NeqtAfUFI/AAAAAAAAA24/kHagkGaurU0/s320/stockings3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="color: #666666;">I'm obsessed with the idea of getting it done, although I won't because it would limit my stocking selections and I'm obsessed with them too. Perhaps I should just draw them on sometimes.... As if I have that kind of patience!!</span></span><br />

</tbody></table><span style="color: #666666;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It just goes to show the utter determination wartime women had to be seen as feminine and to <i>Keep Calm and Carry On</i> despite all the struggles. Think about how we feel when we have an 'off' day. I can't be bothered doing my hair or putting on make-up sometimes. I'm not sure I'd have the kind of strength to cover my bloody legs in gravy, especially if my fella was off fighting a war somewhere. Jeez, when I don't have a boyfriend I don't even bother to </span><i style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">shave</i><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> my legs!</span></span><br />

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">In hindsight it probably <em>was</em> an odd thing to do since I'm such a cake enthusiast, but I decided to go on a ration-diet for charity. My month-long WWII sponsored ration diet was an idea I had some months ago, and specifically planned to do in July as it's the last full month before VJ Day in August. I prepared myself by buying a book and researching on the internet, as well as going to The Imperial War Museum and chatting to the old dears in the nursing home. Since I'm doing it to raise money for 'Care For Casualities' I guess I can't really just 'cave' and break the promise :)</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Wmi7Q0NwG1g/T_GD49oWbPI/AAAAAAAAA10/qmKysfYgvCk/s1600/C4C.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="114" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Wmi7Q0NwG1g/T_GD49oWbPI/AAAAAAAAA10/qmKysfYgvCk/s320/C4C.jpg" vca="true" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.careforcasualties.org.uk/"><span style="color: #990000; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">http://www.careforcasualties.org.uk/</span></a></td></tr>
</tbody></table><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">To prove I've been on this 'diet' I'm going to take some measurements now (36-27-34) because I can guarantee that at the end of this I will have lost a bit of weight. You see, despite what may seem like copious amounts of beef dripping and golden syrup, the recipes from this era just contained a hell of a lot of veg and no processed food. It's generally accepted that people's health during WWII was the best this country had ever really seen so I'm not concerned about my health - just about the fact that I can't really have wine!</span></span> <br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="color: #990000;">To see what the rations actually were, take a look at this link: </span><a href="http://www.memorylanehf.oddquine.co.uk/food.htm"><span style="color: #990000;">http://www.memorylanehf.oddquine.co.uk/food.htm</span></a></span></div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The below photo shows pretty much what I'll eat in a week, along with bread and some veg and thankfully 3 pints of milk:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DMbWDp0dc8Y/T_GElr29zvI/AAAAAAAAA18/wfrtGm-OjQo/s1600/rations.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DMbWDp0dc8Y/T_GElr29zvI/AAAAAAAAA18/wfrtGm-OjQo/s320/rations.JPG" vca="true" width="320" /></a></div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I'm making mine realistic by sticking to fruit & veg which is in season in <i>England</i> in <i>July</i> because during that time I would theoretically be growing my own. There's a really good page for this info called <span style="color: #990000;">eatseasonably.co.uk</span>. and information from that ensures that I have no excuse to try and sneak a cheeky pineapple or something! In a similar vein I can have the odd bit of pickle or chutney but it would have to be something that was in season June/July and I had supposedly preserved myself.</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia;">So there you have it. I'm very interested to see what this feels like after a month, and it's useful as an aid to remembering how brave people were back then and how we don't experience the same kind of deprivation nowadays. If you want to support the cause, please donate to my Just Giving site:</span><br />

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Yesterday, in between writing various articles and reports, I somehow kept finding the time to do some vintage pampering/procrastinating. Inspired by Dita Von Teese, and the fact that she NEVER looks awful, I decided to give myself a half-moon pedicure using my favourite 'Speed Dry'Avon nail-polish in </span><span style="color: #990000; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Red Wine</span><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">. </span><br />

Can you imagine then how totally and utterly chuffed I was to see this tutorial with loads of products from AVON??!</span><br />

(You may remember one of my earlier posts where I said I'd yet to find one...</span><a href="http://make-upbake-up.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/tuesday-tip-5-red-lips.html"><span style="color: #e06666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">http://make-upbake-up.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/tuesday-tip-5-red-lips.html</span></a><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">) </span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Now I know: Extra Lasting Lipstick in </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="color: #990000;">"Eternal Flame"</span></span><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">. Then, to make things even better I looked in the brand new catalogue (for the next campaign) and those lippy's are bloody half-price.....£3.50. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KO1XPy-1-w0/T-dJeSdkTrI/AAAAAAAAA1U/0jkysvvnHiM/s1600/Dita3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KO1XPy-1-w0/T-dJeSdkTrI/AAAAAAAAA1U/0jkysvvnHiM/s320/Dita3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">So I gave the look a go myself since I was heading to a Vintage Fair anyway and knew I'd fit right in...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ds-6yPkbK5E/T-dJzdyKLbI/AAAAAAAAA1c/LXmv6BbQVlE/s1600/Dita2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ds-6yPkbK5E/T-dJzdyKLbI/AAAAAAAAA1c/LXmv6BbQVlE/s320/Dita2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I didn't wear the wig out, of course, but when I went to buy some lovely vintage style underwear in Intimissimi (there's a Sale on btw) the woman behind the counter told me I was beautiful!! </span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">So, get down to my Cake It On! events and don't waste money on expensive products that may not be right for you once you get them home. AVON might be inexpensive but that doesn't mean it's 'cheap'. If it was, the system to try before you buy wouldn't be in place as they'd be too scared of you using the products and thinking they're crap. It's the best way to buy your cosmetics - and even Pixiwoo thinks theyre fab :) xox</span>Carla Valentinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02315529952221641936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8570426678935872920.post-87914647302665531942012-06-20T06:37:00.000-07:002012-06-20T06:37:58.370-07:00Cake It On! <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JIpj8Ab50_8/T92OzJrSCYI/AAAAAAAAAx8/3q1Ys6goZgI/s1600/1920's4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JIpj8Ab50_8/T92OzJrSCYI/AAAAAAAAAx8/3q1Ys6goZgI/s320/1920's4.jpg" width="145" /></a></div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">For a little change I decided to do a 20's/30's inspired event to coincide with the 'Prohibition Party' which happens in London once every couple of months. Whenever I go there, people ask me how I do my hair in a Marcel wave. It looks so difficult but is actually really easy,</span><br />
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">so I thought I'd get everybody down to the lovely Crimson Heart and use my fab model Julia to show how it can be done on even the shortest hair:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RUUEGjrjjok/T92Psy0uDHI/AAAAAAAAAyE/ta6pG-kOVKk/s1600/1920s1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RUUEGjrjjok/T92Psy0uDHI/AAAAAAAAAyE/ta6pG-kOVKk/s320/1920s1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It took probably 5 minutes using just cheap gel, a comb and some sectioning clips you can find in any chemist. Then Julia was able to sit and enjoy the rest of the party as the wave 'set'. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-a3EjbLC2ltA/T92QN93fstI/AAAAAAAAAyM/gzwIHSebKYY/s1600/1920s2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-a3EjbLC2ltA/T92QN93fstI/AAAAAAAAAyM/gzwIHSebKYY/s320/1920s2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Because it has to be done on wet hair, a little trick I've learned is to spray the hair with setting lotion before combing gel through. That way, the next day, you can brush it out into a looser wave and it looks a bit more 30's</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tTml8mLeQrM/T92TqSkb-UI/AAAAAAAAAyk/gCqApTia9TE/s1600/1920s5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tTml8mLeQrM/T92TqSkb-UI/AAAAAAAAAyk/gCqApTia9TE/s320/1920s5.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />

I love this one as the girl has gone to so much effort to make it look 1920's - it's fab:</span><br />

I used everyone's order forms to do a raffle at the end, and the lovely Laura won herself an Avon 'Hollywood Starlet' set of shower gel and body scrub. I like to ensure prizes suit the theme!</span><br />

<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: x-large;">Victory Rolls</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MhKPWJp0pnE/T846wVciZCI/AAAAAAAAAvk/KFHSiFtrhxY/s1600/rollbetty.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MhKPWJp0pnE/T846wVciZCI/AAAAAAAAAvk/KFHSiFtrhxY/s320/rollbetty.jpg" width="251" /></a></div><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">In keeping with the theme of my last Cake It On! party, I thought I'd make today's tip all about Victory Rolls. I was also inspired by the River Pageant on Sunday which was in Battersea Park to celebrate the Jubilee - there were so many pop-up Victory Roll hair salons there and we even had the fantastic Angel Adoree of The Vintage Patisserie in our WI tent. (She's been tagged on my blog a few times so check out the other posts).</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The hairstyle is so popular that girls queued for an hour in the rain, just to have this up-do done by Angel and her lovely assistants.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kPIDwgiHfB8/T847pCG65GI/AAAAAAAAAvw/X9ZNj-J-B-Y/s1600/rollangel.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kPIDwgiHfB8/T847pCG65GI/AAAAAAAAAvw/X9ZNj-J-B-Y/s320/rollangel.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Of course, the pageant was to celebrate the Queens Coronation 60 years ago in 1952 so it may seem strange that Victory Rolls featured so prominently at a 50's bash. However they </span><i style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">are</i><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> associated with the rockabilly music movement from the 1950's, despite their WWII origins, and are still popular today.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OzeJiG56diw/T84_BeSjTEI/AAAAAAAAAwM/GnlPSTmLDe0/s1600/gwenroll.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OzeJiG56diw/T84_BeSjTEI/AAAAAAAAAwM/GnlPSTmLDe0/s320/gwenroll.jpg" width="248" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ime6-5rIRws/T84_E9FQS1I/AAAAAAAAAwU/vWs9UmhIulU/s1600/modernrolls.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="204" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ime6-5rIRws/T84_E9FQS1I/AAAAAAAAAwU/vWs9UmhIulU/s320/modernrolls.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">According to most accounts, the rolls were named after a </span><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">maneuvre</span><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> of a WWII fighter jet and were a fashionable way to keep women's hair off their faces when they started working in the factories etc. They were also a way to express women's style, femininity and ostentatiousness when clothing had become rationed and simplistic. (Similar to the complex hairstyles of the Victorian women who were making up for the fact they were unable to wear make-up).</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I love Victory Rolls so much as they really are a statement and product of that particular zeitgeist and what's more they're </span><u style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">really</u><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> easy to do when you have the hang of them, and weirdly addictive!</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">So my tips are simple. First, you have to curl your hair and it really doesn't matter which <i>direction</i> you curl it in, as long as it's curled. You can do it however you like: tongs, heated rollers, whatever works for you. But for authentic curls which literally last until you wash your hair again, I suggest foam rollers:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xujqbVr3QoY/T85AZiIOqVI/AAAAAAAAAwk/hBq3nLB2CwA/s1600/pins2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xujqbVr3QoY/T85AZiIOqVI/AAAAAAAAAwk/hBq3nLB2CwA/s320/pins2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">To get a decent 'set' which is actually less hassle, I put curl balm on my hair (which was about 89p from Superdrug) then I spray with my favourite setting lotion (see my previous post on that - it's fabulous stuff!). Because setting lotion has alcohol in it, after you spray your hair it won't be long before it suddenly feels about 80% dry. That's when you put it in rollers and forget about it. </span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Now I need my curls to really last and I can't sleep on rollers, so what I tend to do is take the rollers out before bed and kirby grip the curls flat to my head - that's a <i>flat pin-curl</i>. If you put a bandana over your head you can sleep comfortably, and that is exactly why the bandana look was popular in the 40's and 50's...to hide the pincurls during the day! (See Lana Turner in The Postman Always Rings Twice to see how effective that is.) If I have a vintage event on a weekday evening, I'll literally keep the curls in all day, under a scarf - see my previous post on that too :)</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Once you take the curls out you'll look like this:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3IqNM_tlYhQ/T85CKulrXII/AAAAAAAAAww/ozyp4uvqBDM/s1600/pins1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3IqNM_tlYhQ/T85CKulrXII/AAAAAAAAAww/ozyp4uvqBDM/s320/pins1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The rest of the style simply involves taking sections of your hair from your parting to right behind your ear and first brushing it out a bit. Then, back-comb or 'tease' (as the Americans say) the inner part of the chunk of hair and then you'll find it basically rolls over on its own fairly easily. Then, when you're happy with its position you can use bobby pins/kirby grips to keep them in place, and they'll really hold because of the teased hair. Do have hairspray and a brush handy to neaten up the front and smooth the baby hairs too. And when you get frustrated with it, try to remember that apparently there were no kirby grips back then so the women used to use pipecleaners to do their styles! I have no idea how...</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Once you know how to roll you'll suddenly find yourself doing all sorts of styles.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Turning off the main roads of Shoreditch and onto Leonard Street, you begin to feel the hustle and bustle of the City slowly fade off into the distance. Then, stepping over the bright red threshold of the cosy Crimson Heart vintage shop, you've finally reached your oasis of calm. </span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Descend the stairs like Alice in a retro Wonderland, and all the delights of the tea-shop await. For this particular Cake It On! which had a theme dedicated to the upcoming D-Day special of The Blitz Party, those delights included a soundtrack of fabulous 40's female singers and foam rollers aplenty as well as the usual fabulous ambience and decor.</span><br />

It's nice to be able to try the samples and get recommendations, not just from me but from the other customers, which products are the best. I also like to include some Avon history during the course of the evening and this time it was the fascinating story of their company (and other cosmetics companies) during the war. Half of Avon's factories became weapons manufacturers during WWII for example, and their mosquito repelling formula (which is now found in Avon</span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="color: #990000;"> 'Skin So Soft'</span></span><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">) was manufactured originally for the troops.</span><br />

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I also created a little 1940's pin-up quiz for ladies to fill in the blanks: on the list, some <u>first</u> names were left blank, and others had blank <u>surnames</u>. The the first one was meant to be <i>Lana</i> Turner - instead I received different variations including Tina and Anthea! I also got Gene <i>Simmons</i> instead of Tierney and <i>Lily</i> Savage instead of Anne... <span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I may be an Avon Lady but that doesn't mean I'm only going to push my own products as one company can't possibly cover all bases. </span><br />
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">For example, one of the things I really hate about wearing make-up is lipstick! It doesn't matter if you buy a long lasting one and blot a few times between layers and put it over foundation and maybe set it with powder...the fact is <i>it comes off</i>! On your teacup, on your food, on someone's face...whatever.</span><br />
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I have one tip for this and it's to use a product like Maybelline Superstay 24 colour:</span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6X-YtC2AAR8/T6_oUnswDxI/AAAAAAAAAqA/By1fBLpyotY/s1600/maybelline.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="284" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6X-YtC2AAR8/T6_oUnswDxI/AAAAAAAAAqA/By1fBLpyotY/s320/maybelline.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #990000; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">"Red Passion"</span><br />
<div style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: small;">I used to use this all the time and was sure they discontinued the red I like (above) but in Superdrug the other day I found it. I tested it on my hand to see if it was the right colour then toddled off home excitedly clutching my new lippy. I spent the rest of my night relaxing and had an <u>hour long bath</u> with oils and bubbles and everything...and the below pic is the same dot of colour on my hand after all that!!</span></div></td></tr>

<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Don't get me wrong - I absolutely love my job, but I feel like I havent't stopped these last few weeks! Strangely, I missed out my 'Tuesday Tip' this week because of course it was a Bank Holiday on Monday and in general I just seem to have no idea what day it is. And I have no idea why I'm so shattered if it's only been a short week anyway...? All I know is I will be trying to get some quality time by myself this weekend for a bit of pampering and a cocktail or 2....</span><br />
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Last Cake It On! You can do the same thing, especially after the next Cake It On! as I will be giving more of these vouchers away :)</span><br />
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia;">have a great weekend - until next time....xox</span>Carla Valentinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02315529952221641936noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8570426678935872920.post-46144573488873139212012-05-06T06:11:00.003-07:002012-05-06T10:41:05.929-07:00The Blitz Party<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large;">Saturday May 5th - Shoreditch</span><br />

<span style="color: #0c343d;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">So the clothes are pretty important and I was so pleased to pick up this Tara Starlet dress at their sample sale last weekend. The lovely Tara Scott, who is a committee member of my W.I, basically <u>is</u> Tara Starlet and her company make reproduction clothing from original vintage patterns...and they do it all ethically - it's well worth checking out their website:</span></span></span><br />

</tbody></table><span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-align: center;">Then of course the second most important thing is hair and make-up! I used my usual trusty tools for the hair: setting lotion (about £1.50), hot rollers, kirby grips (about 99p) etc (Ooh my nan would be proud...! All those old fashioned products and </span><b style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-align: center;">cheap</b><span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; text-align: center;"> too! <span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The easiest thing to do to give yourself a little vintage glam is the eyeliner flick which got progressively bigger from the 40's through to the 60's. No matter what other make up you have on your face or what you're wearing, this is a nod to a bygone era which will change you from 'half asleep' to 'hottie' in seconds. </span><br />
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I wear this look for <i>myself</i>, not because I want men to 'fancy me' but because it's my own little homage to the women of the past and it's the one part of my personality I can get away with displaying at work (more than I can with hair and clothes).</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jBuM6AaiVHY/T6AzBNITAgI/AAAAAAAAAl8/eNuMHFeFxzY/s1600/linerme.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jBuM6AaiVHY/T6AzBNITAgI/AAAAAAAAAl8/eNuMHFeFxzY/s320/linerme.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">But it's worth noting that the look can really only be achieved with liquid eyeliner that has a brush attachment, or a brush and an eyeliner pot - don't buy those crappy pointy foam wands (like the one below) which are meant to make life easier because they just won't work. It's hard to tell from the pics but this is too rigid...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kpY5ViZ7C30/T6AzTBCPZ9I/AAAAAAAAAmE/HYXuvBQLfpo/s1600/liner1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kpY5ViZ7C30/T6AzTBCPZ9I/AAAAAAAAAmE/HYXuvBQLfpo/s320/liner1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I bought this one by mistake once when I wanted a brown liquid eyeliner, but I kept it as it <i>does</i> have a use even though it's not it's intended use: I think it's really good to use to put a </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="color: #990000;">beauty spot</span></span><span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> on when you're doing vintage looks like Marilyn or Jean Harlow. Pencil is a bad idea for that - use one of these instead.</span><br />
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Anyway, the liquid eyeliner I use at the moment is a Rimmel one that looks like this...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-agw4TSlqoVw/T6Az_cS9cqI/AAAAAAAAAmM/3jU_8ScEVEM/s1600/liner2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-agw4TSlqoVw/T6Az_cS9cqI/AAAAAAAAAmM/3jU_8ScEVEM/s320/liner2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">as it's one I bought ages ago. Now that I'm selling Avon I've ordered an eyeliner brush and Supershock Eyeliner so I'll let you know how I get on with those when they arrive. (I think it'll be better for late 50's looks more than anything, as eyeliner got thicker then) but I'll give it a go so I know whether to recommend it or not. The basic idea is that the bristles are what allow you to 'glide' and create the winged effect, so anything too rigid is just more hassle, not less. </span><span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Also, take a look at the below pic:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1hlQFoun150/T6A2qHTbopI/AAAAAAAAAmg/UXrqZ4PeUcg/s1600/marilyn_monroe_makeup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1hlQFoun150/T6A2qHTbopI/AAAAAAAAAmg/UXrqZ4PeUcg/s320/marilyn_monroe_makeup.jpg" width="226" /></a></div><span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Any Marilyn Monroe tutorial that tells you to use a black liquid eyeliner is totally wrong - she wore a brown pencil! I'm not a pencil eyeliner user (in general) but I've ordered an Avon one, especially because Pixiwoo recommended it (below) and I'm going to show you how to recreate the Marilyn look at the next Cake It On. </span><br />

Event<span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large;">April 23rd at Crimson Heart</span><br />
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">On a grey and rainy day I found myself tying a bandana around my victory rolls to keep them sheltered from the elements. I carried my white petticoat in a bag lest it should be splashed with dirty puddles and I bolted across Shoreditch with my 'Avon lady' bag in tow!</span><br />
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia;">And I'm so glad I did because despite the horrible weather we had a fantastic turn out and a really great night at Crimson Heart .</span><br />
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia;">The first thing I'd like to do is thank the fabulous Vivien of Holloway for the incredible cupcake print circle dress and aforementioned petticoat which I wore throughout the event, to many 'Oooh!'s and 'Aaah!'s and 'Give me a twirl!'s from the ladies:</span><br />

<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Get a matte Hollywood look without the cakiness by using Avon MagiX Face Perfector.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-G7iKfEf7j-k/T5aonP3MxxI/AAAAAAAAAig/y31bMM4gTQM/s1600/AvonMagix.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" oda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-G7iKfEf7j-k/T5aonP3MxxI/AAAAAAAAAig/y31bMM4gTQM/s320/AvonMagix.jpg" width="168" /></a></div><span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It's said that in order to create her moist, dewy glow, Marilyn Monroe layered her face in Vaseline and then powder alternatively until she had built up the perfect base. If you look at pictures of her compared with other Hollywood stars of the day you'll see that she was the only one who could get away with that kind of 'glow'</span><br />

This, she said, made the men who saw it 'think of her as unable to control herself or her urges....'</span><br />
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia;">Anyway, that is NOT my Tuesday tip!</span><br />
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia;">My tip is how to create that flawless, smooth look that almost everyone in the Golden Era sported, without the cakiness and suffocated skin they probably also had as a result of their heavy powder.</span><br />
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia;">I really have trouble with a shiny T-Zone (stop the presses!) Yes I know it's not a massive issue but nonetheless I'm sure it's something many of us experience. I used to use Clinique 'Pore Perfector' which is about £17 until I discovered AVON's own version which is only £7 at the moment. It's a soft, powdery cream which smells divine. Put it on after moisturiser and it will ensure that your </span><span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia;">skin only glows where you want it to. It can be used alone, or under foundation as a primer, and if you'd like to try it but don't want to commit to buying full size you can order a little trial size pot from me for about 75p. Either e-mail me or come to my next Make-up, Bake-up! <br />
Until next time...xox</span>Carla Valentinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02315529952221641936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8570426678935872920.post-56928068919370654962012-04-10T08:58:00.001-07:002012-05-06T11:00:00.669-07:00Tuesday Tip (Tried and Tested) #2<span style="color: #990000; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large;">Use Setting Lotion</span><br />
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">If the phrase 'setting lotion' conjures up images of old ladies with blue rinses and tight poodle curls, it's time to update that image and take a tip from your granny...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ote7bNa2nng/T4RSBGduuVI/AAAAAAAAAg4/YXXFvHdq_Z0/s1600/setting2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" nda="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ote7bNa2nng/T4RSBGduuVI/AAAAAAAAAg4/YXXFvHdq_Z0/s320/setting2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Setting lotion is one of the beauty world's best kept secrets and I really have no idea why it's so clandestine. It's the <em>exact</em> thing that was used in the 1940's and 50's to hold a curl, and yet it's not widely produced or advertised anymore. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IRg3lBYFKgI/T4RSVIl9w7I/AAAAAAAAAhA/OWwY5odQnpc/s1600/setting1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" nda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IRg3lBYFKgI/T4RSVIl9w7I/AAAAAAAAAhA/OWwY5odQnpc/s320/setting1.jpg" width="239" /></a></div><span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It's also incredibly inexpensive which may be the reason it's <em>not </em>well advertised...why would we spend £4.99 on a 'strong-hold mousse' if we can get setting lotion for £1.50??</span><br />
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I buy Superdrug's own but you can get many different brands in independant chemists - the same chemists you can usually find other unfashionable but amazing products like Epsom Salts and plastic rain hoods! </span><br />
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It is actually very watery and you can usually buy it in different strengths - many people decant it into a spray bottle (Superdrug do a fantastic one for 99p) and you're supposed to add water to dilute it further as it can be quite strong.</span><br />
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: Georgia;">Honestly, it gives you lovely soft curls that really hold so it's not like a mousse or a gel.</span><br />

PERM lotion is the one that used to smell evil (remember that strange farty smell all hairdresser's used to have..?) but I think even that's changed now. And it certainly doesn't cause frizz. I have the worst hair for being frizzy and I never have a problem with it. It even seems to dry my hair faster which is another bonus. If you really don't want to be naff and buy a granny product then go onto amazon.co.uk and buy Pin-Up Setting Lotion - that's only a couple of quid and may look a bit better on your dressing table. </span><br />
